Her voice slid into my mind. Take me, boss. This is the next step. I feel it. You know I can’t hide out here forever - what kind of Queen would I be if I ignored whatever this is?

I sighed, knowing in my heart that she was right. She angled her body to face mine and began to stare me down. I felt the others in the room grow quiet, watching our silent battle.

Her mind circled mine, inserting more thoughts meant to soothe. The sly thing was learning to beat me at my own game. Jai. Come on. You and I are two of the most powerful beings in Haret - or Earth for that matter.

A faint smile tugged at my lips. She was goddamn right. I knew I coddled her unnecessarily - I needed to protect her more than she needed to be protected.

But in certain moments, I could admit that I loved her most when she was by my side, fierce and fearless.

Silently, I gave in and answered her. I’m just deciding whether to bring the team or keep that sweet Qilin body all to myself in the city of love.

Obviously, we were heading to Earth for a recon mission and not the pleasure trip I would have much preferred. But the look in her wide lavender eyes told me she had all sorts of extra activities in mind.

Fuck me, I was in trouble.

Her lips quivered as she tried to suppress a grin. She knew she’d won. In my head, she offered, Take Dair if you think we need backup. He can siphon anywhere on Earth to get help if we need it.

Fine. But only him. I don’t want to keep track of anyone else, and that Oracle is skittish, I answered her, molding my face into a scowl I didn’t really feel. I flung a thought to Dair to get our things ready, and he siphoned away. Fastidious fucker would need a moment to pack.

Staring the rest of them down, I sent the plan into each of their minds. I knew they’d hate the arrangement, but I didn’t particularly care. I’d skimmed Carlyle’s thoughts a bit, and although I suspected she’d allowed me to do it, I didn’t like her idea of opening herself to the darkness.

It would be a delicate thing to balance, for sure. The fewer of the men who were around to influence her, the better.

I turned to Tilda. “Expect a report back in two or three days, max. Do your politician thing and keep the darkbloods quiet. Our Queen harbors no ill will toward them unless they seek to harm innocents.”

She nodded, her eyes flicking to Carlyle.

“I know words are cheap,” Carlyle said, sighing and tilting her head back to stare at the ceiling. “But please give them my word and reassurance. I have to earn their trust, I know. I’m just not sure how to do that yet.”

“It just takes time,” Toro said.
